The Program

Summit matches volunteer mentors with inner city 4th-8th graders to help motivate them toward high goals and improve their academic skills through personal, One-on-One mentoring. Summit’s mission is to broaden the horizons of these children and instill in them the desire to succeed academically and personally through hard work and character development.

Summit provides motivating talks on a variety of virtues that defeat the negatives of life by fostering positive attitudes towards study, learning, family and community. Ultimately Summit’s goal is help each child — in a personal way — become a better student and a better person. Eventually we want our children to be happier, more successful workers and well respected members of their community. Summit’s motto is: No Child Left Unhelped

The Spring 2009 Program is currently in session:

The Boys program for 4th through 8th grade boys  involves a combination of academic tutoring and character development.  There are Tuesday or Thursday programs from 5PM to 7PM or a Saturday morning program from 10AM to 12PM.  The typical program consists of a sports period, group character/mentoring discussion/presentation, and a one-on-one tutoring session.  There are special group field trips once per semester for both tutors and students.

The Girls program or 4th through 8th grade girls  involves a combination of academic tutoring and character development.  There are Monday or Wednesday programs from 5PM to 7PM or a Saturday morning program from 10AM to 12PM.  The typical program consists of an activity period, group character/mentoring discussion/presentation, and a one-on-one tutoring session.  There are special group field trips once per semester for both tutors and students.

“I am getting to know my mentor Dave. He tells me if I put my mind to my school work, I can be a very smart kid. Mentoring is good for you because you get better at what you are not good at, like literature. I had a U in it and since I have been coming here, I raised it to a C, and now I am going to try for an A. We also work on math. My goals are getting my homework done every night, and I am getting better at filling-out my assignment notebook.
