Far too many Milwaukee school students never graduate from high school; the drop-out rate is reported to exceed 55 percent. This tragic problem is not limited to our city. Indeed, more children drop out of our nation’s schools each day (over 4,000) than servicemen were lost at Pearl Harbor six decades ago.
We believe two causes contribute to this tragedy. One is the lack of close connections with caring adults who can motivate these children. The other is an absence of firm moral values that act as a guide in their daily lives.
Our Solution
Summit was established in 1990 as a One-on-One mentoring program for Milwaukee’s inner city children. By 1993, it was incorporated as a non-profit organization. Through tutoring, recreation, and personal friendship, our programs foster relationships between dedicated mentors, parents, and their children in order to encourage intellectual, cultural, and moral growth all around. We are inspired by the ideals of the No Child Left Behind Act, which seeks to help “build the mind and character of every child, from every background, from every part of America.”
