One-On-One Program Begins!
This week the One-On-One Tutoring and Mentoring Program began for the Fall semester at Summit!
Milwaukee's Alarming Drop-Out Rate
Students living in Milwaukee's inner-city are dropping out of school at an alarming rate of nearly 60%. Already by the third grade, 25-35% of these students are less proficient than the state average, and by the 10th grade, this percentage unfortunately increases and many students get so far behind that they become too discouraged to continue.
Summit's Work to Counter the Problem
Beginning with 4th graders, Summit helps students get up to grade level at an early age so they are prepared for the rigors of high school and beyond. Students work with their own mentors in the One-On-One Program through the 8th grade, when they graduate into the high school College Bound program. Results of assessment tests and parent surveys indicate how students at Summit are making great progress in both academics and character formation.
Structure of the One-On-One Program
Each week students are each paired with their very own volunteer tutor for one hour of individual tutoring and advising followed by a short character talk and goal-setting. The last hour is dedicated to a fun sports activity or craft project.
By developing deep relationships between students and their dedicated mentors, Summit makes possible the long-term intellectual, cultural, and moral growth of the individual student. Beginning with students in the 4th grade, Summit provides unparalleled individual attention and support in academics and character development. This is complemented by Summit's parent seminars, which help to prepare both the parent and his or her child for success at the high school level and beyond.
